“In this study, we developed a decoupling strategy for achieving formal 1,3-translocation of aroyl groups across saturated carbocycles. The approach combines Norrish–Yang photocyclization with oxidative cleavage and hydrogen-atom trapping, overcoming long-standing kinetic challenges associated with 1,3-migration.

One particularly exciting aspect of this work was identifying reaction conditions under which the oxidant Mn(OAc)₃ and a thiol reductant can coexist without mutual quenching, enabling orthogonal downstream reactivity. Beyond migration chemistry, the platform enables ring expansion, scaffold hopping, stereospecific modification of chiral substrates, and several other promising applications.”
